What are you counting?

When we feel stressed or worried, it can be easy to start counting our hardships. The moment we focus on our heartaches, our minds look for more problems. Then, we only see the bad.

Years ago, I started a daily gratitude practice. I decided to count my blessings. In a notebook, I write down what I am grateful for every day and what I love. The simple gratitude practice trains my mind to look for the good in my life.

God blesses me abundantly every single day. I believe it pleases Him when we pause and thank Him for His grace and love. Right now, I have everything I need at this very minute. Therefore, I want to praise God for my blessings instead of complaining about my struggles.

I heard this question years ago, and it made me look at my life differently. What if you woke up tomorrow with only the blessings you praised God for today? I don’t know about you, but I’d be very sorrowful.

If we took out a notebook and listed every blessing of this year, I guarantee we would see this year differently. Yes, I have endured hardships, but I have also received generous gifts. And on any given day, my blessings greatly exceed my troubles. God is so good to me.
