I Got in God’s Way—and It Hurt People

Imagine being such a horrible representation of God that you make others not like your God. That was me.
I will NEVER forget how those words stung. Someone actually told me they didn’t like my God. I wanted to reject the words, dismiss them quickly, and act as if they had never been spoken, but as they swirled in my mind, I knew they were true. That’s the part that hurt the most.
When God tears down all of our beliefs, whether those spoken to us by others or misinterpretations of the scriptures, we can open our minds and hearts and listen or continue in the lies; it’s our choice.
As I sat with God, He showed me that my job was to be a witness for Him. He wanted me to give others a glimpse of Him through my life. By how I acted, prayed, believed, and loved. God doesn’t want me to judge others and try to change them or point out their sins by giving them all the rules and the law. That’s His job. God is the only one who can open another’s eyes to their wrongdoings and blindness.
If we try to do it ourselves, we create such a mess. That’s what I did. I made God out to be someone He’s not.
God is loving and merciful, and He has grace for our every need. Once we are saved, nothing we do can separate us from Him or make Him love us less. Honestly, the only thing that can separate us from Him is unbelief. God doesn’t make us love Him or want Him. That’s our choice.
The enemy tells people every day that God doesn’t love them. When Christians put conditions on their love and only love those who they consider worthy and those who they consider righteous, it confuses and gives the enemy power.
I want to love people so deeply, without any conditions, that they want to know more about my Lord after they have been with me. I want them to know I sin, too, but God has a remedy for all sins. I want them to know how He helps us with everything and forgives us for our faults and failures.
We can tell people all day long that we love them, but charity is the love of God in action. We have to show them.
If we go to God and sincerely desire to show others God’s love, He will help us. Love can move mountains.
