Follow your heart

Lately, I’ve heard people claim that we shouldn’t follow our heart. Since this (follow your heart) is one of the rules for my book, Zippy’s Club, it made me go back and evaluate my thoughts on this topic. I wanted to explore why I believe this statement.

First of all, I believe that God should be the very center of our lives. Therefore, I believe He is my heart. The day I got saved, God came into my heart and set up His kingdom. He helps me to know right from wrong. While my brain may give me tons of logical information, since its job is to keep me alive, it will not always lead me in the right way. My brain loves to keep score. It remembers every time someone hurts me and even makes us stories about the experience.

Love for other people, kindness, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, etc is in my heart. My brain wants to judge other people and only see their sins, but my heart looks for the goodness in them and desires to treat them as God treats me. God will always lead me the right way. He knows the situations and people who are the best for me and the ones that are not. When we surrender it all to Him and allow Him to lead us, then He will direct us in the right way.

Proverbs 3:1-7 (KJV)
3 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

The devil wants us to judge other people. He wants us to separate ourselves from others and God. But in order to fully serve God and to give others a glimpse of His goodness, then we have to love them. Even if we release them, we still need to do it with love.

I want to have favor with God. Therefore, I try my best to love others and to forgive them if they have hurt me. Hatred only hurts the person who is holding it. I desire to be like God and to do His will. So, I will listen for the still small voice of my Lord and follow Him.
