Deleting The Snooze Button

Some days I just don’t want to get out of bed. So when the alarm clock goes off, my first reaction is to snooze. The only thing the extra ten minutes does is make feel bad. By the time it alarms again, my mind has a whole list of reasons to snooze again or to just turn the alarm off, and wait for the backup an hour later.

To say that it’s hard to get up every morning and do the things that I need to do is an understatement. I recently read a book that explained why we shouldn’t snooze. According to Mel Robbins in the 5 Second Rule, we sleep in 90 minute sleep cycles. When we wake up, and then go back to sleep our body is expecting 90 more minutes of sleep. So when we wake up 10 minutes later, we feel groggy. This has happened to me so many times. I have woken up alert and ready to get up, but then I have gone back to sleep and woken up the second time very sleepy. I have decided that I will not snooze any longer.

From now on, I will set my intentions the night before.  Whatever I decide to do the night before, will be what I do in the morning. Because when the alarm sounds, we have 5 seconds to get out of bed before our minds starts giving us a list of excuses. In the book, Mel Robbins, uses a technique called the 5 second rule. She encourages her readers to count backwards from 5 and then get up. The counting is supposed to give our brain something to think about, instead of going back to sleep. Whatever works, right?

Getting up early is hard, but so is regretting my decision to sleep in. I am ready to take control of my life. While I had been doing great about getting up, all it took was a few negative thoughts to derail me. Last week, I gave into the urge and snoozed a few days and it made me feel horrible. When I conquer my mornings, it just makes me feel so much better.

My morning schedule:
  1. Get up at 5 a.m.
  2. Jump on rebounder (mini trampoline) to drain my lymphatic system.
  3. Drink my coffee read my bible
  4. From 5:30 to 6:30 write a daily blog and schedule daily posts
  5. Workout at 6:30
  6. Then get ready for my day

When I follow this schedule, and conquer my morning, then my whole day goes better.

Have a wonderful Monday!
