Choosing Love: Breaking Free from Judgment

We can’t love others and show them our love with hate for their sins looming in our minds. I’ve seen it quoted so many times: hate the sin and love the sinner. But I can’t find anywhere in the Bible where this is a commandment. We can’t hold hate and love in the same place. If I tell myself it’s okay to hate the sin, it leaks and bleeds onto the person.

When we think it’s acceptable to hate someone’s sin, we fall victim to the enemy. He uses it on us to make us feel superior as if we are better somehow because we don’t commit that particular sin. It’s a trap. Hatred is like a poison that seeps into our hearts and minds and contaminates our love.

The better option is to choose love. Love the person. Period. Let love be enough. Instead of choosing hatred, choose empathy. We don’t know what people are going through or how the enemy attacks them.

When we judge their sin, we stop the flow of love. If you don’t believe me, test the theory. How do you feel about someone who sins in a way you don’t understand? Is your heart open to them? Or do you view them with disgust?

I attended a funeral once that really opened my eyes to the power of judgment and how cruel it can be. It was unlike any funeral I had ever been to. The speakers talked about how horrible the person was and their sins. But when it came time for the preacher to preach the funeral, he said with tears in his voice, “He was my friend, and I loved him.”

That day, the Lord gave me a little lesson on judgment. Do I want to be the person with judgment or love?

Judgment pushes people away, while love draws them in. It’s not our place to fix someone or point out their sins. That is between them and God. Our responsibility is to LOVE THEM.

When I made this shift, my life changed. It enabled me to love deeper than I had ever been able to, and it erased the separation between me and others. Everyone is worthy of love without any restrictions.

God loves us, knowing we have all sinned and will continue to sin until the day we die. But our sins never change His love for us. The blood of Jesus covers every sin. It releases us from the law and judgment and provides us a way through love. Therefore, let us continue the legacy of His love. Let’s choose to love others as He loves us.
