When God’s Silence Feels Like Rejection

Do you ever feel rejected by God?
Unanswered prayers can sometimes feel like a painful rejection. We know God can help us and answer our prayers, but when He doesn’t help amid all the pain and uncertainty, it can feel like rejection.
I experienced this as a little girl. Every night, I went to sleep with a prayer on my lips and hope dancing in my heart. I begged for my hands to heal and for my difference to be erased from memory. I wanted normal hands like everyone else, and for no one to ever remember that I had been different.
So every morning, when I jerked my hands from beneath the covers, the disappointment smacked me in my aching heart. I knew God could help me, and I couldn’t understand how He could watch me suffer every day and not do anything about it.
I was being bullied at school. And the enemy was bullying me in my mind. I lived in the torment of being told how horrible I was, and then believing it and replaying the conversations over and over in my mind.
Sweet friend, if you are in this place, I want you to know that I understand. I begged God to heal me. It didn’t happen. I begged for help, but it didn’t come the way I asked.
I felt rejected instead of blessed.
Abandoned instead of loved.
Day after day, I felt as if I was drowning in my misery, and no one seemed to notice that I was drowning.
God knew. He saw every struggle, and He never left me. I still can’t tell you all the reasons He didn’t answer that childhood prayer the way I wanted. But looking back now, I can see that He has taken the very scars I begged Him to remove and used them to bring hope to others.
Every hardship has given me wisdom that I couldn’t have received otherwise. Some things people can tell us; others we have to experience.
Just because we can’t see God working doesn’t mean that He isn’t.
Just because the blessing doesn’t come when we want and expect doesn’t mean it isn’t coming.
Sometimes the waiting is part of the process. God can use hardship to shape us and prepare us for work we cannot yet see. If we turn to God in the fire, we will learn and grow.
It takes a certain amount of faith to walk with God. Therefore, we need to experience things beyond our control to see His miracles.
I am not going to pretend for one moment that I understand all the ways of God and why some suffer and others don’t. I don’t know His plans or even the way. But I know Him, and that makes all the difference.
During the hardest times of my life, I experienced God differently and came to know Him more deeply. We learn things through hardship that we couldn’t learn otherwise.
God hadn’t abandoned me. Even in something I couldn’t understand, He was shaping me. He didn’t reject me; He chose me.
When I stopped fighting Him and resisting the purpose for my life, everything changed.
I had asked God so many times, why?
Why did you allow me to be harmed as a baby?
Why did you choose me?
Why didn’t you protect me?
Why didn’t you prevent it from happening?
For years, I didn’t receive the answer I desperately wanted. I asked those questions through anger, pain, confusion, and tears. But one night, something in me was different. I wasn’t demanding an explanation anymore. I was finally in a place where I could receive a different perspective. I had learned that others died when the bands attacked, but I lived. I had never considered that possibility before.
One night, as I sat on my deck in the dark, God showed me. In that moment, God knew my heart was ready to receive the truth.
When I asked why He let me live when some babies die, a light shone on my hands, and I heard one word: hope. The Lord explained that I was meant to help others and give them hope.
In that moment, I understood that God could use my life, my differences, and even the scars I had spent years wishing away to carry hope to someone else.
God didn’t give me the rest of the plan, but He confirmed that He had one. And just knowing that God saw purpose in my pain helped me tremendously.
If you are struggling, take it all to God. He can handle your feelings. God can help you work through every emotion and give you a perspective you’ve never considered before. And even if it’s not time for all of that yet, He can comfort you in the pain.
He sees you.
He understands you.
And even when you cannot understand what He is doing, you can bring every question to Him.
Jeremiah 29:11 KJV
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
God has not forgotten about you. Jeremiah 29:11 wasn’t spoken to people whose lives were going exactly as they wanted. It was spoken in the middle of a difficult season. God knew the end even when they couldn’t see it. And He knows ours, too.
