What If God Is Waiting for You to Show Up?

Are you waiting until everything feels ready?
If I wait until I feel ready, I may never do what God puts on my heart. I might think I need something more.
More wisdom.
More talent.
More time.
More instruction.
But what if what we really need is more of God?
God doesn’t call us to do His work independently of Him. If I could accomplish everything He placed on my heart without Him, I wouldn’t need faith. Sometimes the size of the calling is what keeps me close to the One who called me.
Every calling from God is too big for us. We don’t fully understand His plan, nor do we know His ways. We don’t know how to do His work without Him.
That’s where the enemy causes doubt in us. He tries to tell us that we should know how to do what God has called us to do. When we don’t, then he tries to discourage us and convince us to give up.
What we need is more time with God.
When I sit with God each day, He teaches, and He guides me. He shows me what to do and gives me the strength to do it. Obedience doesn’t require perfect circumstances. It takes a willingness to follow the Lord—even when we don’t understand it all.
After all these years, I still can’t manufacture the words and always know what to write. As I sat at my computer this morning at 4:25 a.m., staring at a blank cursor, I could have decided I had nothing to share today and quit. Because, in all honesty, I didn’t have anything. My mind was blank. I was sleepy. What would it hurt to miss today?
But I stayed.
Then the first sentence came.
I typed it.
Then another came.
God didn’t give me the whole message before I sat down. He gave it to me as I obeyed.
Obedience is my responsibility. God doesn’t make me do His work. He invites me, and it’s up to me whether or not I show up. I could have slept through my writing time this morning. I could have allowed my doubts to consume me. I could have done something else. But instead, I waited on the Lord. And the words appeared.
Psalm 25:4-5 KJV
4 Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
If I could go back and tell the version of me who first started writing anything, it would be this:
Wait on the Lord, and He will teach you how to use your gift. You don’t have to figure it out. You just have to show up with a willing and humble heart. God will take care of the rest.
Maybe you don’t feel ready for what God has placed on your heart.
Show up anyway.
You don’t have to know everything.
You don’t have to see the whole plan.
You don’t have to feel confident.
You just have to be willing.
Bring God your empty page, your uncertainty, your weakness, and your willingness. Then wait on Him.
Sometimes God doesn’t give us what we need and then ask us to show up. Sometimes He asks us to show up so He can give us what we need.
