Stepping Out of the Darkness: Choosing God’s Light

How long will you stay in the darkness?

Sometimes our prayers contradict our decisions. We might ask God to help us change something in our lives, and then continue choosing to stay the same. Change is uncomfortable. Following the Lord requires that we deny ourselves and choose Him. 

It means opening our eyes to everything and stepping out of the darkness, towards His light. 

Romans 13:12 KJV

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

When we are willing to see where we are, what we are doing, and the truth of it all, we move toward the light. Being honest with ourselves about where our mind and heart are most days is a big step toward change. 

Auditing our time and choices with God can be so hard. The enemy wants us to stay tucked in the darkness where he quietly influences our decisions. He wants us to waste every minute of every day. And to always choose what the flesh wants. 

But we break free when we replace some of the time wasters with time with God. When we remove a lot of our distractions, we can see the Lord more clearly. And start desiring the truth and a deeper connection with Him.

The truth is that I want to know more about my Lord. I want to reflect Him to others. I want to be on fire for Him. But I can’t expect the voice of God to be the loudest voice in my life if I spend most of my time listening to everything else.

The more we intentionally seek the Lord, the more aware we become of His presence in our everyday lives. We will start seeing Him everywhere in everything. He is the light that chases away the darkness. 

The darkness tells us to stay where we are. To scroll a little longer. To procrastinate another day. To choose comfort over obedience. We don’t have to stay where we’ve been. We can cast off what belongs to the darkness and put on the armour of light.
