From ‘Can’t’ to ‘Can’: Breaking the Cycle of Self-Doubt

How often do we believe that we can’t do something, when the reality is that we won’t?

Can’t is a tricky word. It is filled with excuses and limitations. If we believe we can’t do something, we most often won’t even try. In the moment when the thing arises, we accept defeat without effort. And every time we accept defeat, without trying, we make our world smaller.

I’ve lived this.

For months, I stayed home. I kept the same routine. Every day looked like a replica of the previous day. With every month that passed, my anxiety grew bigger, and my beliefs about my abilities got smaller. Being in a crowd terrified me. Driving scared me. The enemy constantly told me all the things I couldn’t do, and I believed him.

When we believe we can’t, then we won’t. God showed me that I didn’t have a capability problem; I had a belief problem. Through my time with the Lord, I realized that the strength God places in the human spirit is far greater than any limitation.

If God puts it on our hearts to do, then we can do it because He will help us. We have to be willing to break the cycle and prove we can.

Sweet friends, we can use our prayers and tears to help. Instead of crying in defeat, we can pray for the strength to do it. When God urges us to move, we can step forward with faith and trust. God’s got us.

Sometimes we also make the excuse that we don’t know what to do. While it might be true to some extent, it can also be one of the enemy’s tricks. If he can keep us stuck in indecision, then we won’t do what we need to do. We might not know what to do, but God knows what we need to do. We can pray for guidance and then do what He tells us to do.

So today, let’s do something that feels hard and beyond our comfort zone. Let’s take a step toward where God is calling us. We don’t have to fear failure. God will be with us either way.

Let’s adopt this mindset: I would rather try and fail than fail because I was too afraid to try.
