Do You Need the Plan or the Guide?

When God asks you to do something, do you obey or question Him?

I wish I could say that I say yes immediately. Obey without inquiring. But when I evaluate my life, I can see hesitation. A common excuse I give the Lord is that I don’t know what to do. I pause, waiting for understanding, while perhaps God waits for obedience to show me the next step.

I don’t have to know the details. I have to trust the One who gives me the instructions. 

God knows the details. He knows the way. And if we follow Him, He will bless us and transform us. As I read in Genesis this morning, something stood out to me. God called Abram, but along the journey He transformed him into Abraham. God’s calling wasn’t just about changing Abram’s location. It was about changing Abram.

When we follow the Lord, worship Him, and obey Him, we are transformed. God is the One who does the work in us and through us. Therefore, we can let go of the pressure of not knowing what to do or how to do it. When we surrender to God, He does it for us. 

Genesis 12:1-2 KJV

12 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

² And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

In this verse, God is talking to Abram. He told him to get out of the country, away from his family, to the place God would show him. Can you imagine getting these instructions? Then, in the next verse God doesn’t tell Abram to figure it out and try to make something incredible out of his life. He says, “I will make thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:”

Sometimes we get stuck on the details, thinking we are responsible for making God’s promises come true, but God is the One who does it all. 

Genesis 17:5-6 KJV

⁵ Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

⁶ And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

Being in the presence of the Lord changes us. Obedience changes us. When we keep our eyes on the Lord and walk with Him, He will lead us to the beautiful blessings only He can give us. We don’t create the fruit in our lives. God does. 

So my thought for today is this:

We don’t have to know the way. We need to know the One who is the way.
