Circling Comfort or Chasing Calling? Breaking Free with God’s Help

Life feels a little messy for me right now. I’ve been trying to think of a way to explain what this season feels like for me, and the image of a bike came to my mind.
Every time I get on the bike and start pedaling to where I want to go, the enemy shows up. He’s the shadow up ahead that looks dangerous and gives me a little stab of fear. As I ride toward the shadows, he’s the thing that jumps out of nowhere and knocks me down. And he kicks me and screams fearful words as I try to get back up and keep moving forward.
He does just enough damage to make me pause. Take a little detour that seems safer. Perhaps on a route that feels comfortable and I know the way.
But here’s the thing I’ve learned: I will keep going in circles as long as I stay in the comfort of what I know. I will never get to where I truly want to go. I’ll continue moving, and maybe even fighting or striving, but I will never make the progress I want to make.
The only way for me to reach where God is leading me is to walk with Him. God goes before me. Sometimes He shields me from the enemy’s attacks, and sometimes He uses those very attacks to strengthen my faith. God knows what’s ahead and how to help me overcome every fearful shadow. But I have to follow Him and listen to Him.
On the journey to our dreams, the terrain will probably be rough. It might leave us bloody and bruised. Eventually, we reach the end of our own strength. That’s where we discover the strength of God. We will need God to help us cross over and reach the blessing only He can give us.
When we find ourselves in these places, sweet friend, we can accept defeat amid the attacks and obstacles, or we can accept God’s help. He can make a way when there is no way and create something beautiful out of brokenness.
Isaiah 41:10 KJV
10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 43:19 KJV
19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
Psalm 46:1 KJV
46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
If I believe these verses in my soul, it changes how I walk through this journey. I stop feeling alone and realize God is with me, and He knows the way. He has all the resources I need.
So I stop trying to figure it out on my own. I stop running ahead and then become discouraged when I don’t know which way to go. I stand still and wait. Then walk with Him.
