Do you feel beautiful?
I remember standing in front of the mirror and tearing myself apart. Never feeling beautiful or good enough. Regardless of what I looked like, my scars made me feel ugly and ashamed. My critical self-assessment magnified every scar, wrinkle, and imperfection.
I was never peaceful or satisfied with myself. Until God showed me that beauty is a mindset. It’s an inner feeling. Outward things will never give us inner beauty.
God’s love makes us glow from the inside out. It’s about how we think, feel, and treat people. It’s about how we make others feel in our presence. It’s about how we take care of ourselves. Mind, body, and soul.
A beautiful spirit is one of the greatest things we can adorn. Nothing is more beautiful than someone who loves others and illuminates God’s love.
Sweet friend, the enemy will use every imperfection and insecurity against us. He will have us walking around with our heads down because we don’t feel good enough, or with our heads raised because we think we are better. He tries to make our worth all about our flesh.
We are more than our flesh. We are eternal souls created and loved by God.
Don’t get me wrong, aging is tough. I notice things about myself that I don’t like. I work hard to eat well, exercise, and age well. I want to feel good as long as I can. But I also don’t want to be bullied into buying certain products or adopting certain practices.
I was at the mall yesterday to get my computer fixed, and I asked a lady who was giving away samples if I was going the right way. I only had a few minutes to make my appointment. She took advantage of the moment I was stopped and persisted that I needed some cream under my eye to remove my wrinkles. To be nice, I let her do it. Then, I rushed away.
On my way back through, she stopped me to show me how wonderful the cream had worked. Only she was confused about which eye she had put it under. When I pointed out that the eye without the cream actually looked better, she wanted to remove it and try again. When I declined, she made a big issue out of it and my wrinkles.
Tearing me down didn’t make me want to buy her product. It made me sad for how people and businesses can use our insecurities and flaws to hurt us and make us feel vulnerable. In a vulnerable state, we are more easily manipulated.
But if we have an empowering mindset, we aren’t affected by it. It’s fine if we want to use certain products or practices, but they don’t change who we are inside. Beauty is not an image. It’s a way of seeing yourself through God’s eyes. It’s a mindset. And we get to decide what we want to believe about ourselves.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
When I feel bad about myself, I probably don’t need another cream or product. I just need some time with the Lord, so He can remind me of who I am. God can help me remove all of the ugly things inside of me, like shame, hatred, unforgiveness, etc., and replace them with His goodness.
The most beautiful people I know aren’t the ones with perfect appearances. They’re the ones whose lives reflect the fruit of God’s Spirit.
Galatians 5:22-23 KJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
