Are You Trying to Be Faithful—or Impressive?

I don’t know what to do, Lord.
That seems to be a recurring theme in my days. I’m home today with an open schedule and a cluttered mind. So many things are screaming for my attention and pulling my attention in different directions.
I want to be faithful to my Lord and the things He wants me to do. I want to clear the clutter in my mind and write the most beautiful, inspiring words. I want to fully lock in with Him, but my mind drifts.
The enemy wants me to believe that I need to be doing something beyond what I am doing. I need to learn more, read more, watch more videos, clean the house, put out fall decorations, get cleaned up, and do it all perfectly.
He tries to sell me an all-or-nothing mindset. If I can’t do it all perfectly, then I have failed. And if I have already failed, what’s the use? I could zone out and read fiction. Or watch a movie. It’s a holiday weekend after all.
I got a late start. My day is off track. It all feels overwhelming. I want to cry. Quit. Forget my goals. And stuff my gift deep inside and use it when I feel better equipped and ready for what’s next.
Even as I write these words, I feel the swirling of hesitation and procrastination. The enemy is screaming at me. Trying to pull me in the other direction. One decision leads me to God, and the other one pulls me away.
So in the mess, I have learned to press closer to God.
I deliberately sit down. Quiet myself. And welcome the stillness.
I can accomplish 100 things today. I can run myself ragged. Burn myself out and make myself sick trying to do it all. Or I can shift my mindset.
Instead of:
What do I need to do today?
I can ask:
How can I be faithful with what God has given me?
Faithfulness doesn’t require me to do everything. It asks me to do the thing God has placed in front of me.
1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV
2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
Therefore, I want to invite God into my plans and ask Him to help me recognize what matters most today. God knows what I need to do and what I need to let go of. He also knows my deepest intentions. He knows if I am trying to be faithful or impressive. God knows if I am trying to please people or steward my gifts for Him.
When I break it all down, there is nothing I can hide from God. He knows all about me, and He loves me unconditionally. Therefore, there is nothing to earn, accomplish, or try to impress. Nothing I can do will make God love me more. His love is already perfect.
So, I ask myself deeper questions:
Why are you trying to do it all?
Who are you trying to impress?
Why do you feel you need to do it all?
Being honest with myself is such a great gift. It forces me to look deeper within myself. The enemy knows my weaknesses, and he uses them against me. But there is something so deeply freeing and beautiful about talking it all over with God.
God knows my next step. He understands my limitations. Trying to be something or someone I am not causes great stress. While leaning into the Lord, with all of my faults and failures, gives me peace. I don’t have to try to be impressive. I can bring it all to the Lord and give it to Him.
When I hand the Lord my mistakes, heartaches, faults, and failures, He can use them. Someone else has walked an imperfect path, too.
One of my biggest roadblocks has been: What if I mess this up?
But faithfulness doesn’t mean I won’t make mistakes. It means I keep bringing those mistakes back to God. I don’t have to trust myself not to mess anything up. I can trust God even when I do.
Today, I learned that faithfulness isn’t doing everything. It’s continually giving everything to God and faithfully stewarding whatever He places in my hands.
God knows every detail about us. When He gives us gifts, He knows what we will do with them. He knows what we will do when we get knocked down. As disappointments come upon us, God knows what we will do with them.
Sweet friends, it’s not about being perfect. It’s about continually returning to Him. About getting back up. Trying again. Believing it’s possible. And trusting God with every single part of our lives.
I sat down thinking I needed to clear the clutter before I could write something worth sharing. But perhaps this is the writing He wanted from me today. Maybe I didn’t need to overcome the mess before God could use me. Maybe I simply needed to bring Him the mess.
