Discomfort Is an Invitation from God

Do you sit with the discomfort or run from it?

I’m learning that discomfort is a signal that something needs to change in my life. When I feel it, I can pray about it and see how God wants me to handle it, or I can run from it and numb the uncomfortable feelings with something else.

Accurate and complete honesty with God and myself is the only way to escape the pain. If I sit with God in vulnerability, He will strengthen me and give me what I need to overcome. But if I pretend the pain doesn’t exist, then I will carry it with me every day—and it will grow.

That’s where I am now—swirling in layers of unprocessed pain.

Instead of addressing things as they arose, I pushed them inside and tried to forget. But when we suppress the pain, it wreaks havoc on our lives. To heal, I have to be willing to sit with it, let it teach me, and grow through it all.

So I’ve decided to take each struggle before the Lord. While facing reality is hard, pretending it doesn’t exist is even harder.

God knows all about me. He knew me before I was formed. He knows why I am here and the work I need to do. Therefore, He carefully and intentionally created me.

Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)
Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

There’s something so powerful about taking all of our brokenness to the Lord and asking Him to help us overcome. When we stop lying to ourselves and take responsibility for our lives, we invite God into the battle and allow Him to use it all for good.

Sometimes, that means being willing to let go of the pain and the story we’ve become attached to.

Sweet friends, it is not always the circumstances that cause us pain, but the story we attach to them. We create horrific stories from what we assume to be true. But the good news is—we can also create loving, empowering stories.

We don’t have to live as victims of our trauma. We can rise above every storm and live from the victory of Christ. He has already defeated the world, so we can approach every battle knowing we have the victory.

The enemy wants us locked in the prison of our minds, but God gave us the gift of free will. We GET TO choose what to believe.

Here’s what I choose to believe:

  • I believe that God’s goodness covers me.
  • I believe that God can help me overcome every challenge.
  • I believe that God wants to help me.
  • I believe that God has grace for my every need.

What do you believe?
