The Quiet Work That Changes Everything

When I make my life all about me, I don’t show up as my best self.
In an all-about-me frame of mind, I can’t see the needs of others. When my focus stays on what I want and how things make me feel, I lose sight of my higher purpose. I stop loving and serving the way I should.
Jesus made our purpose very clear.
Matthew 22:36–40 (KJV)
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Some of my very best moments come from doing things for others. My home feels different when I do things with love instead of obligation. I show up differently when I cook for my family out of love instead of duty. Even cleaning my house feels easier when I do it with gratitude rather than resentment.
In all reality, we all have the same purpose—to love and serve God and each other. We may carry it out in different ways, but the outcome is the same. When we humble our hearts and become willing to do whatever God asks of us, He helps us figure it all out.
Some days, I stand on a stage and share my story with hundreds of people. Other days, I hold the hand of someone who is sick and sing to them. Sometimes I write something that someone desperately needs. There are days I’m in the trenches, praying quietly for others. Other times, I send a message, make a call, or simply listen.
And some days, all I do is pick up trash off the ground or smile at a stranger.
God sees the big things and the little things. And somehow, it all changes me.
Honestly, it’s the small, daily acts of love that make the greatest difference in my life. When I open my eyes and my heart and listen for those gentle nudges, God shows me exactly what to do.
As my daddy used to say, I am nothing, but sometimes God makes me look good.
When I listen to those nudges and do whatever He asks, my soul is satisfied in a way nothing else can accomplish.
