Protected by the Prayers God Didn’t Answer

Have you ever prayed so hard for something that still fell apart or didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to?
Sometimes we try to hold onto things that cause us pain, and in those deeply heartbreaking moments, we don’t understand why God won’t help us. We cry out, but it feels like our heartache is ignored. We try to fix ourselves, but nothing works. We suffer, and the silence of it all can feel so defeating.
But we only see our side. We don’t see how it all might unfold if God answered our prayers the way we wanted Him to.
Have you ever received a little glimpse of what life could have been like? I have. And it was terrifying. God showed me what it could have been if He had listened to me. I saw it all in someone else’s life as they made the choices I wanted to make and lived the life I prayed for. I also watched the devastation unfold because of those choices.
My prayers of heartache turned into prayers of gratitude. God protected me from things I couldn’t or wouldn’t see. He knew if He answered my prayers the way I asked, it would destroy me. So He hurt me in those moments to protect my life and calling.
While I don’t understand everything, I do know this one thing, and it’s a major revelation when we understand it on a deeper level. God cares for us. He loves us too much to give us things that will harm us. So when He chooses not to answer our prayers, the way we ask, He wants to give us something better. In the moment, it might hurt us. But there’s a difference in having pain for a season and having pain that destroys.
When I can surrender to His will, the expectation of my way dissolves. It frees me and assures me.
Reminding me that: God’s got me.
Even when I don’t understand, He is still protecting, still guiding, and still loving me.
