How One Thought Changed Everything

Regardless of what happens to us, we get to decide how we want to feel about it. Our circumstances do not define or control us. We are the ones who get to choose what to think; therefore, we create our feelings and results.

Example:

Circumstance: Amniotic Band Syndrome affects my hands, arm, and feet.

Thoughts: I am not good enough. I am scarred. God cursed me with scars.

Feeling: Worthless.

Action: Cry all the time, and try to hide my scars.

Result: Become depressed and withdraw from the world.

(At this time, I thought this bad thing had happened to me.)

Circumstance: Amniotic Band Syndrome affects my hands, arm, and feet.

Thoughts: I am thankful to be alive. My scars prove I survived the trauma. God blessed me to live.

Feeling: Blessed.

Action: Show others my scars and tell them how good God has been to me.

Result: Live in gratitude and shine a light to others.

(Now, I know that this was all part of God’s plan for me. It happened for me and not to me.)

As you can see, my circumstances did not change, but my result certainly did. I often tell people that things are not nearly as bad as we perceive them to be. This is why I feel that way. One thought made me so depressed that I didn’t want to live at times. The other thought helped me to not only accept my scars but also learn to be grateful for them as well.

My friends, I urge you to examine your thoughts. Are they helping you or harming you? Every day we can change our thoughts. We can do this by reading God’s word and asking Him for the wisdom to understand it. When we align our thoughts with God’s word, then we will be able to overcome our circumstances.

Below is the scripture that helped me to see things differently.

Romans 8:28 (KJV)

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

My scars are not shameful as I had initially thought. I continuously use them to glorify my God and shine a light on Him.
