Do You Compare Yourself to Others?

When we compare ourselves to others, we either feel like we don’t measure up, or we believe we’re better than they are. Either way, comparison doesn’t serve us. It only distorts our perspective and steals our joy.

We don’t know what someone else had to go through to get their blessing. If we judge them, compare ourselves to them, or covet what they have, we rob ourselves of peace and gratitude.

The only person we should ever compare ourselves to is who we were yesterday. And we only look back to see how far we’ve come—and where we want to go next.

God gave each of us unique talents and hardships. From the outside looking in, someone might appear to have a perfect life—especially if we’re only seeing their highlight reel. But I guarantee they have hardships, too.

Every season of life has its own challenges. We’ll never reach a point where everything is perfect, so we might as well find joy in today. Stop looking at what she does and focus on what God is calling you to do.

That one is gold for me. When I spend too much time looking at what other people are doing, I get discouraged because I don’t measure up. Feeling as if I’m not good enough makes the enemy’s lies more believable. He uses our insecurities against us. But when we focus on our own lives and what God wants us to do, the comparison game loses its power.

One of the most incredible things we can do is to be unapologetically ourselves. God created us for a purpose. He doesn’t want us to be a replica of someone else—He wants us to be the person He created us to be.

It’s fine to be inspired by someone else as long as it makes us feel encouraged. But the moment comparison begins to steal our peace, we need to look away from her and look within ourselves.

You already have everything you need inside you to live your best life. God placed it there. When you become still and honest with yourself, you can live with clarity. And when you have clarity, you can go to work—becoming the person God created you to be.

Colossians 3:22–23 (KJV)
22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God;
23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.
