Changing My Focus, Changing My Life

What are you focusing on right now?

At any given moment, we all have good and bad things going on in our lives. While we can’t control what happens to us, we can decide how we react to it. If we focus on the bad, we might start thinking life is terrible, and in doing so, we will look for more horrible things.

We all have the freedom to choose our thoughts. Complaining about things we don’t want in our lives invites more unwanted stuff. I have been writing about my worries and hardships in my journal.

Yesterday, as I was walking, it occurred to me that I am asking my mind to think about my problems every day. So this morning, I changed my journal prompts.

Instead of writing about what I don’t want in my life, I am asking better questions.

Here are a few examples:
What do I need to focus on today?
What are my intentions for this day?
How can I show up as my best self?

Our mind tries to answer whatever questions we ask of it. Therefore, I want to focus my attention on what will help me. Complaining and worrying bring me down, while praising the Lord and praying prayers of thanksgiving lift me up.

Today, I want to use my breath to praise my Lord and discuss my blessings. I want to focus on the fruit of the spirit and how I can honor my Lord. When I start counting my blessings, I realize the abundance of God’s love and provisions. They are boundless and free.

Sweet friends, we are deeply loved by an amazing God. That is what I want to focus on today.
