The moment I feel any pain, I want to run away. I try to escape the pain with various methods: prayer, by ignoring it and hoping it goes away, or something to numb it. But I have found the pain will continue to be there until I am willing to feel it.
It doesn’t seem as bad when we can see pain and discomfort in our lives as a teacher showing up to help us in some way. In that mindset, we can lean in and become curious about it all.
I like to think of pain as a warning. It alerts me to things that are wrong in my life. If I ignore it, then I might go directly into the fire and experience an even more significant pain. Therefore, I become curious about it. I lean in and observe my thoughts and feelings.
When we are willing to see the truth, God will reveal it to us and show us a way to overcome it.
Sometimes, the truth of our situation demands change. And that is the hard part. My flesh wants to stay in my comfort zone and do things the way I’ve always done them, even if it’s painful.
But there is freedom in standing in the pain and being willing to feel it. When we start dissecting things and pulling apart our preconceived beliefs, we can see things from a different perspective. Being open to the truth, not only what we believe, is powerful. It allows us to grow.
Growth is hard but such a beautiful process. The Bible tells us that with wisdom comes heartache, but wisdom helps us and allows us to help others.
I’m learning not to be afraid of the process. I can stand in the discomfort because God stands with me. He comforts, strengthens, and gives me what I need for each moment.
Sometimes, I try to live too far ahead. I worry about the potential ache of tomorrow without dealing with what I need to deal with today. When I take care of today’s hurts, I no longer have to deal with it.
Sweet friends, I have carried around years of heartaches because I wouldn’t feel it. The discomfort of stuffing and dismissing was more painful than actually feeling it and dealing with it.
Whenever we are ready, God will show us how to face our hardships and overcome each one.
